This mosaic shows an interesting natural living testimony of our geographical history.

Canaima National Park is located at the southern end of western Venezuela, south of the Orinoco River, municipality Gran Sabana of Bolivar State, being declared a national park on June 12, 1962 by the national executive. the park, has 3 million hectares, thus occupying the second largest protected natural area of expansion in Venezuela and the seventh in the world. The park is divided into two sectors:

West and East, the western area called Canaima, simply access the area via commercial flights from Caracas, Margarita and Ciudad Bolivar, being in this place privileged by nature, the highest waterfall in the world, the amazing Angel Falls, from Canaima Lagoon envision a spectacular setting with beautiful waterfalls, inviting to take a refreshing swim in its white sand beaches. in the eastern area are the vast savannah that is possible to travel via land and air, reaching Santa Elena, the last town in southern Venezuela, just 20 minutes by car from the border with Brazil.

Geological history of Canaima National Park

The park is part of the highlands of the Guiana Shield, which comprises all the land in Venezuela's Orinoco south, consists of two main geological formations: an igneous-metamorphic, with an estimated age billion in 2000 years represents one of the oldest continental nuclei of the land surface.

Experienced significant changes to the geographic area where is located the Canaima National Park, from the beginning, what we envision today is the result of a long period of geological processes of change through time.

Last two billion years or so, in the era of the Precambrian, formed a super continent called Pangea, which included, America, Africa, Antarctica, Asia and Europe. The continent began to separate due to the formation of a crack in the earth's crust, thus causing the formation of the Atlantic Ocean and the creation of different portions of lands called shields. geography of the Guiana Shield in Venezuela that existed at the beginning. was a vast plain of flat land, where the altitude was the same level of Tepuyes visible today among the 2000-3000mt.

The formation of these lands originated due to movement of different types of materials that traveled through the action of strong water currents, transporting rocks and minerals from distant places. These materials were sedimented by creating a basement of igneous and metamorphic rocks from the cortex lead, these sediments due to erosion of the rock crystal, were consolidated in the stratum of sandstone, quartzite and nightsticks, they covered rocks several kilometers thick on the basement, then. As strange mountains were formed Tepuyes call us today call much attention in places where the materials deposition was performed under a certain order, the resulting rock was great resistance. By contrast in the area where the shuffle deposit is less resistant rock. After the formation of the great plain. For a long period of time (approximately between 400 - 200 million years) occurred one be of weather events that caused significant changes in the geography of the Guiana Shield. The transformation of the landscape was mainly due to drastic climate variations arid to wet and vice versa in constant heavy rainfall and prolonged droughts, freezes, high and low temperatures, storms, hurricanes, tectonic movements of the earth. The erosion of weathering was slowly removing the material deposited in the great plains for millions of years. in places the gift of rock was less resistant to erosion was higher, being as a result of this great transformation, the Tupu and Canaima National Park landscape we see today, no doubt, like a faithful testimony to the changes Through millions of years in this geographic area of infinite beauty.
